About This Trip
Voice of the Locals is an organised experience for travellers who want to connect with a destination on a deeper level. Together, we will explore Morocco's culture through authentic local experiences, incredible food, and daily yoga sessions that encourage you to slow down, stay present, and experience every moment more deeply.
Over the course of the trip, we will visit two of Morocco's beautiful coastal destinations: the charming harbour town of Essaouira and the laid-back surf village of Imsouane. Think colourful medinas, hidden cafés, long dinners filled with traditional Moroccan dishes, sunrise yoga, surf, and conversations with locals that give you a completely different perspective on the country and life.
This is more than a surf retreat or a holiday. It is an invitation to experience Morocco through the people who call it home, and perhaps discover something about yourself along the way.
Who We Are
We are Pia and Eefje, two friends from Germany and the Netherlands who met while living in Cape Town. Although we came from different backgrounds, we discovered that we shared the same belief about travel: the places we remember most are never defined by landmarks, but by the people we meet along the way.
Pia found her passion through yoga, using it as a way to stay grounded, reflect, and remain open to new experiences. Eefje has always explored cultures through food, believing that every meal tells the story of a place, its people, and its traditions. Together, these passions became the foundation of Voice of the Locals.
We created Voice of the Locals because we wanted to offer a different way of travelling. Instead of rushing from one highlight to the next, we believe the most meaningful experiences happen when you slow down, spend time with local people, share meals, and become part of everyday life, even if only for a few days.
What to Expect
Throughout the week, we encourage you to be curious, open-minded, and fully present. You will spend time with local people, hear their stories, and experience the culture through genuine human connection rather than through sightseeing alone.
Every morning we practice yoga, not because this is a yoga retreat, but because slowing down allows you to experience more deeply. Yoga creates the space to reflect, stay present, and connect more meaningfully with the people and places around you.
We will not just eat Moroccan cuisine. We will learn where it comes from, cook together, share long dinners, and discover how food reflects history, family, and culture. Food is always the fastest way in.
From learning to surf in Imsouane's gentle bay to joining local fishermen on the water, the ocean is central to life here. We bring what we learn on the mat into the sea through movement, play, and presence.
The heart of every Voice of the Locals trip. You will meet the people who call these places home, hear their stories, and experience what daily life truly looks like, giving you a completely different perspective on Morocco and life.
We will explore Essaouira's colourful medina, filled with handmade carpets, ceramics and spices. We will discover traditional Moroccan cuisine, local street food, and relax with a visit to a traditional hammam.
No rush. Morocco teaches you to slow down, be present, and enjoy life as it comes.
"We hope you leave Morocco with more than just beautiful photos. We hope you leave with new friendships, a deeper understanding of another culture, and perhaps a fresh perspective on your own life."
The Journey
Our journey begins in Essaouira, where we will slowly introduce you to the Moroccan way of life. We start our mornings with yoga and explore the colourful medina, filled with handmade carpets, ceramics, and spices. We will enjoy our first traditional Moroccan dishes, and immerse ourselves in the culture through the people we meet along the way.
In Imsouane, Morocco becomes more than a destination and the connections grow deeper. We continue each morning with yoga but also bring what we learn on the mat into the ocean through surfing and traditional fishing. We cook alongside local chefs and share meals with the people who welcome us into their community. By the end of our stay, you are not only leaving with memories but also with a genuine understanding of what life in this small fishing village feels like.
Where We Stay
As we travel between two destinations, you will experience two different styles of accommodation — each one a reflection of the place itself. All rooms are shared with one other guest (two people per room).
A beautiful house built around a peaceful central courtyard. Riads are the soul of Moroccan architecture, tucked behind medina walls, quiet and cool, with rooms that open to the sky. The perfect place to ease into Moroccan life.
A welcoming guesthouse where locals and travellers come together. Simple, warm, and right in the heart of village life, exactly the kind of place where the best conversations happen over breakfast.
